Ahh… Freshman year… Fall of 1975… co-ed residency… Archie’s senior year… Sayin’ “hey” to Pete Johnson in the hall all the time (he was dating a resident). hanging out of the windows of Unit B and chatting with Coach Hayes (who always had a few seconds to share with us as he prepared to drive his white El Camino (with side paneling and Astro-turf bed liner) home from practice (which was then held in the stadium, with the south fence tarped over during Michigan Week practices to foil spies)… Razzing then ABC sideline reporter Jim Lampley from the Unit C windows as he tried to impress the visiting UCLA cheerleaders with tours of the ABC production truck (he flipped us off…LOL). Remembering being the only students allowed to play our intramural games on the turf ( Why, yes, I DID play football in The ‘Shoe… “flag” is irrelevant )… The Michigan Game party that started Thursday night, and the “competition for highest number of “sneak-ins” to the game… shhhh… never read it here)…

I still point out to others the long-coveted Unit A window room, still seen on interior shots of the stadium… Having our own Sigma Sigma Delta t-shirts as a big FU to the “Frat Rats” (which I still have)… the year of the blizzard, with cancelled classes and 60 below wind chill… I so wish that I had a time machine… sigh…

Ahhh, the Stadium Dorm. Never lived there, but spent a LOT of time there with your brothers and my brother. I took my grandson to last year’s Spring Game. He was almost 7. Afterwards I took him down the West side to the “tower” and showed him the room “Uncle Tim lived in a long time ago”. He was suitably impressed; “Cool”, he said.

I loved every minute to living there in the 1997-1998 school year, except for the meeting where Andy Geiger, Bill Hall, and David Williams came to tell us they were tearing out the dorm to make room for luxury suites. I understand the need for renovations, but boy that meeting hurt. I still have a press release flyer we tried to distribute to the ABC Sports crews on a game day trying to stop the renovations. ABC’s Jack Arute took one, autographed it, and handed it back. Brent Musberger warned us to quit bothering his producers. A few minutes later, Gordon Gee strolled by and told us he appreciated what we were trying to do (although we understood he was committed to renovations).

Bob,

One of my favorite memories of living in the Stadium Dorm was game day Saturday mornings. We would hang out of the unit D window and people would think we were football players and ask for our autographs. We were more than happy to oblige, writing any player’s name on a piece of paper and throwing it down to them. There are probably people around today who think they have Art Schlichter’s autograph. Of course, given Art’s past, my forgery of his signature is likely just as valuable.
